What Did You Say?

Now we’re all used to having earbuds that use multiple microphones and have some form of noise cancelation (ANC) built in. But we’re not used to having those earbuds be able to record conversations that are going on around us, for example in a meeting, or be able to sync with an app to do translations and transcriptions of recordings that were made

Now back in the day we’d have to do interviews recorded over the phone (for accuracy/confirmation), then take that recording and have a service transcribe it for us. Costly, of course, but mostly time consuming. What we needed back then, and now have, is an earbud that does more than just provide audio to the ears — it should have A.I. features and be able to not just record conversations we’re participating in, but also transcribe them and do other things to make life easier. So yes we’re talking now about the RecDot AI Voice Recorder Earbuds. And if nothing else, the time saved/money saved more than makes up for these earbuds cost — which is under $200.00 and so money well spent.

Let’s Get Physical

Let’s get the physical out of the way before we get to the A.I. features. RecDot consists of two earbuds, coming in a charging case that both protects and charges them up when not in use. With a design somewhat similar to that fruit’s version, they fit easily and well in the ear and so can be worn for hours at a time without causing numbness. ANC is standard and does its job well and, being wireless using Bluetooth, easy to sync with the associated app. Expected phone-related functions are there, like receiving phone calls, etc., and four microphones work so as to provide clarity of what the earbuds are hearing. Pairing is so standard these days that it’s not worth spending the time, but it’s worth noting that these earbuds are geared for high resolution audio so a quality response is pretty much assured.

Here Comes The A.I.

So with all this in mind it’s beyond fair to say you’re not getting a RecDot just for listening to music — you’re getting what amounts to an A.I. assistant. One that can handle some 78 languages and 145 dialects (with the basic tier doing one language and translation). Encryption and other tech protecting recordings in storage as well as in sync of course.

FlashRecord means you’re able to start a recording without the app involved — it’s a red button found on the charging case (and also touch sensitive control on the RecDot stem). A live recording holds up to an hour and a call two hours, so as regards live you do need to keep track of the time. Where the app comes in is in using A.I. to generate transcripts and summaries along with action items. Recording alerts are in default and managed by the app — of course you have control over what the app is doing and when

For sure we wish we had these earbuds as they would have come in handy when we interviewed “Meatwad” of Aqua Teen Hunger Force (not just because of the length of the phone interview but also the difficulty of understanding the voice actor’s character voice styling). We could have done the call and then transferred using the app to turn it into a transcript easy-peacy. That would have made our testing RecDot using a phone call from our Mother a lot more entertaining for sure.

Answer The Question

So to finish some questions that need to be addressed — the first being battery life. Since YMMV depending on how they’re being used, to say that each earbud will give you up to 9 hours of use seems fair — we found that on average over 5 hours is defo. The second being that transcriptions are free with the basic (free) plan and allow for up to 600 free minutes a month (there are paid-for plans that enable greater latitude). Recordings are saved to the RecDot itself, but transcriptions requires the use of the app as they’re done in the Cloud. Finally those wanting to use their Mac/PC to record can do so with the desktop app in conjunction with their account and these ‘buds.
