This portable fan blows hard

It’s Time To Blow

A long time ago one summer a battery operated fan appeared. Now this was many years ago so it was a bit bulky looking rod with a plastic set of blades at the top. The motor whirred nosily and the breeze was mild to say the least. And yes more than one finger or tip of the nose got pinged by one of the plastic blades.

So times certainly change — give or take 40+ years — and you’d expect a portable fan to blow some cooling air at you to have changed too. It has and it’s called the Handheld Fan Ultra2

This Ain’t No Toy

Now to start the Ultra2 is no toy — it’s shaped like a vertical 50’s SciFi B-movie handheld raygun and is made of metal (aluminum), weighs under 11 ounces and has a powerful (9000mAh) rechargeable battery inside that can operate for up to 25 hours (YMMV) and eat up a charge in about 3 hours or less. So that takes care of powering the electronics which has a lot going on. For example the fan itself which we’ll get to presently. But there are other additions which a handheld fan of the past could never encounter: you want to use Ultra2 at night, then you better have a flashlight — oh good, there’s one built in and it has 3 levels of brightness plus a “flare” setting. What about charging that ever present smartphone that lives on you like a parasite? Go for the 18 watts devoted to it being a fast charging power bank.

Check out the design that goes beyond just being metal — maybe you want to hold the fan up against your face to enjoy that cool breeze, but couldn’t your hair (if long enough) suddenly get caught up and entangled? Not a good thing to have happen so the company built a honeycomb-like hole air inlet structure instead of just a gaping fat hole sucking in air. Add to that a safety lock that keeps the Ultra2 from accidentally turning on should it get bumped a bit, like being in a travel bag or during a trip/flight. And yes its rear has a removable feature to allow for cleaning out the debre floating all around us.

Now let’s talk about that fan’s potency. Turning it on is a simple as one way on and one way off — you’ll get the hang of that fast indeed. As does the scroll wheel controlling wind speed that reaches 17m/s (damn fast). Which adjusts between 1 and 100 as the 43000 RPM motor does its thing because the Storm mode eats air like candy). And instead of of guesstimating wind speed and battery life just use the LCD digital display for real-time viewing of all that. Beats holding up a wet finger for sure. And yes it’s strong even if you’re not holding it up to your face all that close because you’re not crazy. Especially if it’s not summer but here in SoCal it’s still pretty warm most of the time and it works well to be able to cool off.

This Is The Air You Need

The Handheld Fan Ultra2 is compact enough to fit just about anywhere and would you believe this — stick on the appropriate magnetic air nozzle (there’s two) and you’ve got an inflation pump or dust blowout (used it to blow away the dust from the grill intake of our home theater power station which went well because it’s a strong push of air and went even better against the bottom of the fridge where dust bunnies were making a home).

So no WiFi and no Bluetooth because why would there be? But when it comes to making air go Flash-speed, this will do it. They even toss in a USB charging cable, cleaning brush, lanyard, magnetic brush, screwdriver and a storage bag to hold it all. Plus the choice of it being dark grey or light brown.
