So you take it and pull/expand it as needed so that it will fit into your cup holder, give it a twist and it locks itself into position. It’ll stay there until you release it using the app but before all that you’ll have charged up its internal rechargeable battery (more on that later), worked through the installation process as provided by the free iOS/Android app and connected the provided cable between it and the OBD II port located under the steering wheel (clips provided to aid in this). This connection provides continuous power even when the car is parked/turned off and is in pretty much all cars now. Also in the few cases where there’s already something plugged into the OBD II, the company points out that there’s a splitter available for use. And since you have the key fob provided, the Keep Car Alarm knows when you enter/exit the car and arms/disarms itself automatically.
So you’ve left the car. Keep Car Alarm is now active. Now unlike most car alarms, here we get a response (thanks to all those sensors/radar) when there’s human motion out around the car. What it does then is start to “chirp” and flash red lights — neither of which are terrifying but certainly loud enough to get the attention of the person whose gotten too close. Few are stupid enough to consider doing something nefarious at that point, especially as they have no idea what might happen next.
But let’s say the person disregards all this and forces entry into the car. That’s when the real “fun” starts. And while the thief probably won’t know there’s something in the cup holder causing the loud shrieking that rivals that of an ambulance — being 120dB horrific plus those red flashing lights — they might see the cable reaching the cup holder. So they give it a yank expecting the noise/lights to stop. Nope, because of that internal rechargeable battery that’s just waiting for the chance to continue the “fun.”
And to finish off the loser who might or might not grab something before hurriedly exiting the car, the video camera that’s been recording is streaming what it sees over to the owners app (adding in GPS coordinates).
The Cellular Connection
Now for the tech-elephant in the room — you have to have a cellular connection since obviously WiFi makes no sense here. For that to happen you need a subscription to a 4G/LTE cellular service. Which just so happens to occur through the app when you first start setting things up. The cost isn’t onerous with the first month free which lets you make sure that the cellular service will work for you as it should and for you to understand how this device will do what it can do for you. Should you change your mind after that month, you can stop paying and not have any penalties, other than the device you’re holding is now just a high-tech brick.
